How to shoose coil fed laser machine

How to shoose coil fed laser machine ?

Thinking about buying a coil fed laser machine?

Don't. Until you read this. Real talk on feed accuracy, coil weight limits, servo vs. stepper motors.

details

If you're considering a coil fed laser - whether you're replacing an old press line or automating your first sheet metal job - keep reading. This is what they don't put in the brochure.

Section 1: "Coil Fed" Doesn't Mean "Automatic" - Here's What Actually Happens Inside
Most suppliers show you a video of a laser cutting 100 parts per minute. Smooth. Quiet. Perfect.

A true coil fed laser isn't just a laser cutter with a roll of metal attached. It's a system - and every component has to speak to the next.

Section 2: Coil Weight, Width, and Thickness - The 3 Numbers That Will Break Your Machine
Suppliers love to say: "Our machine handles coils up to 5,000kg."

That's marketing. Not engineering.

Here's what you actually need to know:

Max Coil Weight

5,000kg

That's thetheoreticalmax with a reinforced frame, industrial-grade brakes, and counterweights. Most machines under $150k max out at 2,500kg - and even then, they vibrate like a washing machine.

Max Width

1,500mm

If your coil is 1,450mm wide, and the side guides are adjustable only ±10mm - you're screwed. Look for ±50mm+ adjustability.

Material Thickness

0.3–6mm

That's fine…ifthe machine has a dual-axis height compensation system. Without it, cutting 6mm steel with a 3kW laser? You'll burn through the nozzle in 2 hours.

Section 3: How to Vet a Supplier ?

Can you send a live video of your machine running 1.5mm steel at 8m/min with a 1,200mm coil?
→ If they send a studio video with a white background and no noise - skip.
→ If they send a shaky phone clip from the factory floor, with sparks flying and the operator yelling "¡Más rápido!" - that's real.
Do you have CE, ISO 13485, and ISO 9001 certifications - and can I see the certificates with the serial number of the machine I'll receive?

Coil Blanking - HGTECH

Our company HGTECH began to develop new laser cutting blanking equipment in 2011, and obtained the national invention patent in 2013. Using laser cutting technology of open-book blanking of a complete set of production equipment, by feeding trolley, uncoiled, leveling machine, buffer loop, servo feeder (such as servo leveling and feeding machine can replace the previous leveler and buffer loop, reducing area), laser cutting device, cutting platform, pallet device, waste treatment system, hydraulic pneumatic system and electric control system, through the system control of laser cutting head in laser cutting platform of 3 d motion cutting, instead of press and die, the realization of automatic blanking of the metal belt.

FAQS:

Q: Can I run galvanized steel on a coil fed laser machine?
A: Yes - but you need a fume extraction system rated for zinc oxide fumes. Galvanized steel produces toxic smoke.

Q: What's the difference between a coil fed laser and a sheet fed laser?
A: Sheet fed = individual sheets loaded by hand. Slower. Better for small batches. Coil fed = continuous roll. Faster. Better for high-volume, repeat parts.

Q: Do I need a separate leveler?
A: If your material is thicker than 1.2mm or has a high yield strength (like stainless or high-tensile steel), yes. A good leveler reduces bow and springback - which directly impacts cut accuracy. Machines with 2-roller levelers are for thin, low-strength materials only.
